    Common Name: White Heron
    Taxonomic Classification: Ardea modesta
    Found: Southland 1887
    There are about 200 birds in NZ, but the species is found throughout Asia and Australia. The well
    known long filamentous plumes on the back only develop during breeding season. Only one
    breeding colony near Okarito, Westland. Whitebait is a primary food during nesting time but diet also includes frogs, invertebrates and fish. They are the largest and longest-necked egret in the world.
